Shared Reading KS1

In Key Stage 1, there is a shared vision to the approach of reading which is deeply rooted in story. Each child receives a daily experience of shared reading which is: highly structured, finely planned and methodically taught. Classic and modern stories are carefully selected for their content, as well as their quality of illustration.

Every child’s first experience of a particular text will make full use of the ‘Storywalk’ approach and the teaching adult will endeavour to relate all suitable content to the child’s own personal experiences.

Following the Storywalk, the narrative will be shared and subsequently evaluated through meticulously planned questions over the course of the week.

Retell is integral to this teaching of reading process. Towards the end of each week, opportunities are built-in for children to retell the narrative of the book. There is a strong emphasis on story language, with the expectation that each child will be using new vocabulary, taken directly from the book.

Finally, the story is shared with the family thus strengthening reading links between home and school.
